Liberty Wines named ‘European Merchant of the Year’ by the Sommelier Wine Awards 2014

We are delighted to announce that Liberty Wines has been awarded the European Merchant of the Year award in this year’s Sommelier Wine Awards competition. The win came alongside a total of 107 medals and commendations for wines in our portfolio, of which 17 were Gold and 39 were Silver. As over 70% of the medal-winning wines were from Europe the judges felt this was a fitting award.

The judges also commented, “The fact that it was the only submitter whose Gold and Silver medal tally combined was higher than its joint Bronzes and Commendeds tells you everything you need to know about the overall standard.”

“From Champagne to Madeira and English fizz to Italian stickies, Liberty’s Europeans performed throughout the ‘Essentials’ part of this competition in a way that few of its competitors managed.”

David Gleave MW, Managing Director, commented, “These awards are hugely important to us and are a ringing endorsement for the quality and value at every price point in our portfolio. Their focus on wines with balance, personality, versatility, food-friendliness and value for money and the high calibre of the judging panel mean the resulting awards carry real weight with our customers. Gaining recognition for our portfolio outside our specialisms of Italy, Australia and New Zealand shows how strong our offering is across the wine-making world”.
