L‘Expressio del Priorat is a new label from Mas La Mola...
Winemakers Jordi Masdeu and Alessandro Marchesan have aimed to produce a wine that offers the structure of classic Priorat while being ready to drink young, something we believe they have done with great success. Most of the fruit comes from younger vines at Mas La Mola’s vineyards, which are supplemented by two vineyards that they manage. The result is a wine that is very approachable in style with lively yet elegant fruit and fantastic freshness.
The fruit is sourced from various parts of the Poboleda district of Priorat, where the native Garnatxa and Carignano varieties thrive in the unique microclimate and Licorella slate slopes. Small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah add complexity to the final blend. Long, warm, dry days and cool nights give perfect phenolic ripeness and good levels of natural acidity to balance the powerful character of the fruit. The average age of the vines is 20 years and they are farmed organically although they are not certified.
2012 was a year marked by a lack of spring rain and a succession of heatwaves. The second half of August saw high temperatures that caused some vineyard stress. The only real rain fell during a cold April, from then on until the end of September no rain was seen at all. The lack of rains in the spring and summer meant the grapes were healthy and in good condition at the end of the growing season. The harvest was brought forward a week and produced excellent quality, concentrated fruit.
The L‘Expressio vines were allowed to be a bit more vigorous in order to allow the fruit to ripen slowly and retain freshness. A rigorous selection of fruit took place in the vineyard, followed by a long cool maceration to extract the fine tannins. 30% of the wine was aged for a short period in oak, in order to round the texture rather than add oak flavours, the rest remaining in stainless steel for a few months before bottling.
A true expression of the Priorat terroir, powerful and seductive with blueberry fruit on the nose and the classic flinty mineral character of the wines from this region. Juicy and fruit driven with tender fruit tannins, plenty of acidity, smooth and luscious on the palate with grippy texture, hints of herbs and spices and a long fleshy berry and black cherry finish.
