Puligny-Montrachet `La Corvée des Vignes`

Côte de Beaune

Jean-Claude Boisset

Jean-Claude Boisset has undergone a radical transformation since the arrival in 2002 of...

viniculteur Grégory Patriat, one of the best viticulturalists/winemakers of his generation in Burgundy. Grégory had spent the previous three years working in the vineyards at Domaine Leroy and still spends a great deal of his time in the vineyards, paying his growers by the hectare in order to ensure low yields. He also prefers to work with organic growers, as he finds they produce better fruit. Unlike other Burgundian négociants, Grégory specialises in making wines from 'lieu-dits' or tiny plots of vines, something which accounts for the limited production of most of his wines.

Vineyards

Puligny-Montrachet is devoted almost exclusively to the production of Chardonnay. 108 hectares are dedicated to Villages level Puligny-Montrachet, but even distances of a few metres between parcels will have a noticeable effect on the taste and style of the resulting wines. Grapes for the 2008 Puligny-Montrachet were handselected by Grégory Patriat from the 'La Corvée des Vignes' parcel of vines, which sits directly underneath Premier Cru 'Les Charmes'. Here, the soil is rich in limetone and clay giving both intensity and structure to the wine.

Vinification

The grapes were hand-picked and sorted into small, perforated boxes, then pressed straight into cask for fermentation at 12 degrees C. No batonnage occurred in order to ensure a fresh, mineral style but the malolactic fermentation was allowed to take place. The fermentation was long and gentle, lasting 10 months, with wild yeasts only. The wine was aged in barrel of which only 25% was new oak to avoid heavier toasted aromas, for 15 months. 125 cases were produced, and the wine was bottled using gravity in January 2010.

Tasting Notes

The 2008 has a brilliant, beautiful golden colour with intense floral and citrus aromas. The palate is pure and elegant in texture, with long mineral, lemon and stone fruit flavours. The finish is tangy and refreshing with gentle vanilla complexity.
