La Giuva
The estate was founded by Alberto Malesani, famous in Italy as a former...
manager of both Fiorentina and Parma. While at Parma, he won the UEFA cup in 1999. His passion and intelligence is now channelled into this estate, where he is helped by consultant winemaker Lorenzo Caramazza, formerly of Cantina Valpantena. The name La Giuva is an acronym of his daughters’ initials, Giulia and Valentina, who are heavily involved in the business. The balance, concentration and aromatic intensity marks the wines out from the crowd in Valpolicella, and makes La Giuva one of the region’s rising stars. Production is tiny, and won’t get that much higher than its current level of 18,000 bottles until the new vineyards come into production.
Vineyards
La Giuva's estate covers ten hectares (only five hectares of which are in production) in a cool site in the Val Squaranto, a small valley between the Valpantena and the valley of Mezzane. The vineyards are planted on the top of the hill, at an altitude of 350-400 metres, and are picked later than most sites in the hills east of Verona.
Vintage Information
One of the best harvests in recent years, the grapes in 2013 enjoyed gradual ripening thanks to excellent sunlight rather than heat. The weather in July and August was crucial, with high temperatures and beneficial day-night temperature variations, which were very important for ideal ripening. The weather during harvest in September and October was predominantly good although interspersed with days of heavy rain.
Vinification
The grapes for the Amarone were dried until the beginning of January, when they were fermented at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation took place before the wine was aged in new oak barrels for 24 months.
Tasting Notes
With a complex and ethereal nose, the wine has aromatic notes of cherries, blueberries and chocolate, combined with hints of sweet spice. Smooth and powerful, the palate is remarkably fresh and finishes with ripe fruit.
