by Max Schubert, the man who created Australia’s most famous wine. John passed it on to his successor when he left Penfolds in 2003 to start his own label. He sources fruit from long-time friends in the Barossa, all of whom own vineyards with vines aged from 50 to 100 years old. The wines are made with minimal intervention and showcase the best of the Barossa.

The Shiraz for this wine is from old vineyards in the Krondorf and Marananga regions. Grenache comes from old bush vines (50-60 years old) from the Stockwell and Krondorf regions. The Mourvèdre also comes from old bush vines from the Light Pass and Krondorf regions, the oldest over 100 years old,

Vintage Information

After a dry 2009 vintage the Barossa received its best winter rains for five years. The 2010 growing season started cool and mild, but in November experienced a week of unseasonal hot weather, resulting in reduced fruit set and yield for some red varieties, although Shiraz was largely unaffected. A good soaking rain followed the heat allowing vine canopies to recover. Temperatures through December and January were close to average. Veraison began slightly earlier in January and with good vine balance. Ripening was even and early. 2010 vintage was quite condensed and finished by the end of March.


Fermentation with submerged cap took place in both traditional old open and small stainless steel fermenters. The wine was barrel matured for 15 months, with just 10% new fine grain French oak hogsheads (300 litre barrels) and the remainder in three to six year old barrels. Some Shiraz finished fermentation in new French oak.

Tasting Notes

Deep crimson purple-red. Fragrant spices, combining aromatic red fruits and savoury notes. A flavoursome compote of red and black fruits on the palate with a variety of spices. Youthful fine tannins balance the rich fruit intensity. Subtle oak adds to the structure and complexity.
