Brunello di Montalcino

Montalcino

Cantina di Montalcino

The strength of this producer lies in its ability to draw fruit from...

all over the zone. This means the power of wines from the south can be moderated by the elegance and aromatics found in wines from the north of the zone. The wines have a freshness allied to the power and structure typical of good Brunello. The Cantina di Montalcino was founded in 1975 and was acquired by the co-operative Cantine Leonardo in 1990. The same ethos of quality which now imbues the Cantine Leonardo, is also present in the Cantina at Montalcino.

Vineyards

The vineyards are located in a hilly area in the commune of Montalcino, close to Siena. The estate has approximately 160 hectares under vine, planted at an average density of 3,500 vines per hectare. The average altitude is between 250-350 metres above sea level.

Vintage Information

Vintage 2011 had a slow start with a cool spring and frequent showers. The lower than average temperatures for the time of year continued until July. From mid-August through to the beginning of September, high pressure over the African continent brought temperatures well above 38°C. Fortunately, the vines were able to access sufficient water reserves to avoid stress.

Vinification

Maceration on the skins took place during fermentation and lasted approximately 15-20 days, together with frequent, gentle pumping over. The fermentation temperature was between 30-32°C. Controlling the temperature encouraged the extraction of good colour and soft, ripe tannins. The wine was matured in Slavonian oak casks for three years before bottling.

Tasting Notes

Purple-red in colour, the wine is intensely perfumed with fruit aromas including blackberries, blackcurrants and cherries. On the palate the wine is full bodied with tremendous depth and richness, attractive fruit and well balanced acidity.
