Maison Nicolas Perrin
Maison Nicolas Perrin brings together the scions of two of the great families...
of the Rhône, Nicolas Jaboulet, formerly of the eponymous winery in Tain, and the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel. This joint venture micro-négociant was created in 2009 with the sole aim of producing top quality Northern Rhône wines. Nicolas is able to source the best fruit and wines from growers and producers that he has formed a long standing relationship with, while the Perrin family bring expertise in winemaking and blending, as well as the use of their cellars. The partnership stems from a long standing friendship, a shared love of gastronomy and a philosophy to create wines that represent the best of their appellation.
Vineyards
In the northern part of the Appellation the soil is composed of granite slopes similar to those of Hermitage. In the south the soil is mainly alluvial with a few stony terraces brought by the Rhône river. The vines are south facing, on slopes where the Mistral blows frequently. The wines produced in the North and those in the South of the appellation are very different.
Vintage Information
2010 started with a very cold temperatures and snowfall. Spring started early in April which was exceptionally hot and allowed a fast budburst. Then, in May, temperatures went down and the level of rainfall was slightly higher than average. Flowering was as usual at then end of May, beginning of June. The months of July and August were beautiful. Mid-July temperatures reached peaks during the day but often the high temperatures were followed by rain in the evening, cooling down the vegetation. Sanitary state was perfect and maturities were quite late. In September the temperatures lowered and the nights were cold allowing slow maturing of the grapes. Harvest started around September 25th.
Vinification
The grapes were cold-macerated before being fermented to increase the fruit aromas. Maceration and fermentation did last for about 20 days with pumping-over for the first few days followed by punching-down. The wine was then aged in barrels first for 10 months and then in stainless steel for another 6 months.
Tasting Notes
This wine offers a superb ruby colour with purple hues. Ripe black cherry and blackberries on the fragrant nose with a hint of smokiness. Rich and lively, its fruit flesh flavours are balanced by sour cherry and blackcurrant which nicely 'lift' the wine on the finish. Intense with well integrated tannins, this wine will age well and develop its toasty, smokey aromas.
