Maison Nicolas Perrin

Maison Nicolas Perrin brings together the scions of two of the great families...

of the Rhône, Nicolas Jaboulet, formerly of the eponymous winery in Tain, and the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel. This joint venture micro-négociant was created in 2009 with the sole aim of producing top quality Northern Rhône wines. Nicolas is able to source the best fruit and wines from growers and producers that he has formed a long standing relationship with, while the Perrin family bring expertise in winemaking and blending, as well as the use of their cellars. The partnership stems from a long standing friendship, a shared love of gastronomy and a philosophy to create wines that represent the best of their appellation.

Vineyards

In the northern part of the Appellation the soil is composed of granite slopes similar to those of Hermitage. In the south the soil is mainly alluvial with a few stony terraces brought by the Rhône river. The vines are south facing, on slopes where the Mistral blows frequently. The wines produced in the North and those in the South of the appellation are very different.

Vintage Information

After 2010 (a very balanced vintage) and 2009 (a powerful vintage), 2011 offered plenty of fruit, freshness and body. Despite a hot spring and early flowering, summer was relatively cold and wet. During the month of September, generous sunshine allowed the grapes to reach excellent maturity. Harvest lasted up until the first few days of October for those plots of higher elevation where maturation was slower. The crop was healthy, the grapes of good quality and the yields were plentiful.

Vinification

The grapes were cold macerated before being fermented to increase the fruit aromas. Maceration and fermentation lasted for about 20 days with pumping over for the first few days followed by punching down. The wine was then aged in barrels first for ten months and then in stainless steel for another six months.

Tasting Notes

A lovely ruby red wine with an intense bouquet of red fruit. The mouth shows a rich, balanced and concentrated wine, well integrated with tannins. Pleasant flavours of cherries and red plums continue on the finish.
