Sedella is the personal project of Spanish winemaker Lauren Rosillo, who established his...
'mountain wine' winery in 2006. The winery is located in Sedella, a small town with only 400 inhabitants, at an altitude of 750 metres in the Sierras de Malaga appellation. The modern winery and tasting room was designed by architect Paco Varela and offers great views of the vineyards within this mountainous region. These views are also depicted on the elegant label. Sedella's limited production, use of indigenous varieties and location make this wine a true rarity.
The 2.5 hectares of organic vineyards are located on steep (45°) slate slopes at 650 metres above sea level, near the small town of Sedella. Many of the bush vines are over 100 years old. The grapes are harvested manually with the help of 'draft animals' (donkeys), using Roman ploughs. The Mediterranean Sea can be seen to the south from the vineyards and the often snow-capped peak of La Maroma mountain can been seen to the North. The altitude and proximity to the sea gives Sedella wonderful elegance and freshness.
The 2012 vintage climate was characterised by warm winter temperatures without significant snowfall but with moderate rainfall. The spring held little rainfall which drastically limited growth while aiding against any disease. The summer was hot but with temperatures ranging widely between day and night. The grapes were ripe and ready by mid-September. After the harvest, the autumn season was abundant in rainfall, recovering the land from aridity of the past seasons and preparing it for the next year's crop.
Sedella is fermented in stainless steel tanks and then matured for 16-20 months in a mixture of 225 litre French oak barrels (two year old), cement and 1,050 litre French oak eggs.
Deep blue with violet hues. Sedella has a developing nose of liquorice, dried plums and herbs that gives way to medium bodied fruit on the palate with fine, smooth tannins, crisp acidity and a lovely, lingering finish.
