Brunello di Montalcino

Montalcino

Poggio San Polo

This property was purchased by Valpolicella producer, Marilisa Allegrini, in 2006. Marilisa...

has continued to invest heavily in the estate and has brought in winemaker Nicola Biasi to build on Poggio San Polo's already considerable reputation and impressive levels of quality. Situated in the eastern part of Montalcino, this estate covers 22 hectares of which 16 are under vine and produces wines that are classic in style but with a bit more weight than would be found to the north of the zone.

Vineyards

Poggio San Polo's vineyards cover approximately 8 hectares planted between 1990 and 2000. They are situated at an altitude of 480 metres above sea level, facing south-southwest, on chalky, clay soils. The average age of the vines is 5-15 years and they are spur-cordon trained with a density of 7000 plants per hectare.

Vintage Information

2006 was awarded five stars by the Brunello Consorzio, making it one of the best vintages of the last decade. Warm but not too hot, with a long ripening period and good diurnal temperature differences, especially in the higher vineyards, the climatic conditions encouraged the development of ripe tannins and good aromatic qualities in the grapes.

Vinification

The grapes were hand picked into 17 kilos boxes in the first week of October. After gentle pressing, fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with temperatures reaching a maximum of 28-30°C, with a long maceration on the skins lasting 20-22 days. The wine was aged in French oak barriques (500 and 225 litre) for a period of 24 months, followed by 6-8 months in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes

Intense ruby red in colour. Typical aromas of violets and red berry fruits. The oak brings notes of vanilla to add to the baked fruit perfumes, and just a hint of coffee. A warm mouth-feel, that is generous and full with a long perisistent finish. The tannins are well-defined but not overbearing, and will give good structure to this wine as it develops.
