Poggio San Polo
This property was purchased by Valpolicella producer, Marilisa Allegrini, in 2006. Marilisa...
has continued to invest heavily in the estate and has brought in winemaker Nicola Biasi to build on Poggio San Polo's already considerable reputation and impressive levels of quality. Situated in the eastern part of Montalcino, this estate covers 22 hectares of which 16 are under vine and produces wines that are classic in style but with a bit more weight than would be found to the north of the zone.
Vineyards
Poggio San Polo's vineyards cover approximately eight hectares planted between 1990 and 2000. They are situated at an altitude of 480 metres above sea level, facing south-southwest, on chalky, clay soils. The average age of the vines is 7-17 years and they are spur-cordon trained with a density of 7000 plants per hectare. Yields are 34 hectolitres per hectare.
Vintage Information
2007 was an unusual vintage; the winter was rather warm, followed by a period of intense rainfall between late May and early July, which restored the vines' underground water reserves and vegetative cycle. The grapes grew well and healthily, with well-spaced out, sparse clusters, ensuring an excellent ripening process. Harvesting was carried out in the last week of September as is the norm for fine Sangiovese located at high altitudes. The concentration of sugars was above average with satisfactory levels of acidity. The result is a Brunello di Montalcino of a very high quality.
Vinification
The grapes were hand picked into 17 kilo boxes in the first week of October. After gentle pressing, fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with temperatures reaching a maximum of 28-30°C, with a long maceration on the skins lasting 20-22 days. The wine was aged in French oak barriques (500 and 225 litres) for a period of 24 months, followed by 6-8 months in bottle before release in June 2010.
Tasting Notes
Intense ruby red with garnet hues. Typical aromas of violets and small red berries, followed by subtle nuances of forest undergrowth, aromatic wood, a touch of vanilla and jammy mixed fruit, followed by subtle hints of coffee. Intense, persistent, broad and ethereal. Full-bodied and warm on the palate, with a densely-woven texture and robust body, while the finish is persistent with roundly-defined tannins. The terroir produces a Brunello with a capacity for lengthy ageing.
