To mark this year’s International Chardonnay Day (Thursday 21st May 2020) we are celebrating some of the award-winning Blanc de Blancs Champagnes in our portfolio, all singularly made from this famed grape variety.
The Piper-Heidsieck Essentiel Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut NV was awarded a Gold Medal at the 2019 International Wine Challenge. Made from top-quality Chardonnay grapes from vineyards located in the Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, Aube and Vallée de la Marne, this wine undergoes 40 months lees ageing prior to disgorgement. Boasting a complex nose of crisp green apple, honeysuckle, nuts and toasted brioche, this dry Champagne has a fine and persistent mousse and a vibrant acidity which carries the pronounced flavours onto the crisp finish.
The Blanc de Blancs NV from Charles Heidsieck took home both the Non-Vintage Blanc de Blancs Champagne Trophy at the 2019 International Wine Challenge and a Gold Medal at the Sommelier Wine Awards 2019. This is an intense and complex Blanc de Blancs with 25% reserve wines in the blend and having undergone six years ageing on the lees in Charles Heidsieck’s chalk cellars (the Crayères). White peach, lime and candied citrus notes combine with a biscuity richness and a subtle minerality. It displays impressive freshness, perfectly balanced with the generosity of the Charles Heidsieck style.
Another award winner from the same Grande Marque house is the 2004 Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires. This stunning Vintage Champagne took the number one spot in the Decanter 2019 ranking of ‘Wines of the Year’ and was garlanded with a Best in Show Medal at the 2019 Decanter World Wine Awards, as well as a Sommelier Wine Awards 2019 Gold Medal. Made from a blend of Chardonnay grapes from five of the most renowned crus of the Côte des Blancs (Cramant, Avize, Oger, Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger and Vertus), this fine wine marries power with delicacy and has a hugely expressive and complex nose of ripe lemon, apple blossom, beaten cream and almond. This Champagne was justifiably described by the Decanter judges as “a head-turner.”
