In Conversation With: Luca De Marchi, Proprietà Sperino

David Gleave MW chats with Luca De Marchi, winemaker at Proprietà Sperino, a splendid hillside estate situated in the small town of Lessona in northern Piemonte, which his father Paolo inherited in the 1970s.

Luca discusses the close connection between his study of medieval linguistics at the University of Turin, to restoring the then abandoned Proprietà Sperino and breathing new life into the historic estate, both through his work in the vineyards and in the winemaking, where he honours many of the practices used in the 19th century. Luca also speaks about his love of Nebbiolo, which he deems “not just a grape” but a “condition of our mind and soul”.

Luca and David taste the exquisite Proprietà Sperino `Uvaggio` Coste della Sesia Rosso 2017, a blend of Nebbiolo with local Piemonte varieties Vespolina and Croatina.
