Success at the WSET 2019 Annual Awards and Graduation evening

The annual Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Awards and Graduation Ceremony was held at the City of London’s Guildhall on Monday night, which included the second winner of The Liberty Wines Prize and a number of notable awards for Liberty Wines staff.

There were a record 530 new Diploma graduates this year. The evening ceremony honoured the small number of Diploma students who had won scholarships.

The Liberty Wines Prize, awarded to an Ireland or UK-based student who achieved outstanding results in the Unit 1 - Global Business exam, went to Ben Craighead of The Good Wine Shop in London. As his prize, Ben will join the Liberty Wines team at Vinitaly, where he will visit several of our outstanding producers in the region and attend our special evening events.

Looking to our own team, we are very proud to say that Liberty Wines won more prizes than any other merchant, underlining yet again that we do indeed have some of the best people in the wine business.

Our winners this year were:

Róisín Kennedy

The Wines of Portugal Prize - awarded to a student from the UK wine & spirit trade who achieved outstanding results in the Unit 3 – Light wines of the world exam.

Rosie's prize is a study visit to Portugal. She began her career in the wine trade in her native Dublin and is now a key member of our Customer Services team.

Lucy Perbellini

The Napa Valley Vintners Prize - awarded to a student who achieved outstanding results across the Diploma and is employed in the wine & spirit industry in either North America, Mainland China, Japan or the UK.

Lucy’s prize is attendance at one of Napa Valley Vintners 3-day professional trade education programmes.  This is not Lucy’s first award; last year, she was the recipient of The Wines of Portugal Prize for her outstanding Unit 3 results. Lucy now takes care of Brand Management for our producers from the Americas and South Africa.

Mary Wright

The Graham’s Port Prize – for a student who achieved outstanding results in the Unit 6 – Fortified wine exam and is employed in the UK wine & spirit trade.

Mary’s prize is a study visit to the Douro Valley.  Like Lucy, Mary is a serial winner, previously winning The Gran Orden de Caballeros del Vino Prize for achieving outstanding results in the Level 3 exam. Mary has yet to complete her Diploma studies, so we may well see her back on stage again next year. She is currently putting the finishing touches on our 2019 price list - watch this space!

Huge congratulations to Rosie, Lucy, Mary, and Ben on these great rewards for all their hard work and dedication.
