Liberty Wines welcomes Dominio do Bibei

We are delighted to have further strengthened our Spanish portfolio with Dominio do Bibei from Ribeira Sacra.

David Gleave MW, managing director of Liberty Wines, says: “We are excited to be working with Javier Dominguez of Dominio do Bibei. Their focus on native grape varieties to produce wines with a distinctive sense of place makes Dominio do Bibei a perfect fit for our portfolio. It is a philosophy that our customers have come to expect from all the producers we list, and we are building a Spanish offering that reflects this.”

Javier Dominguez was among an influx of young winemakers attracted to Ribeira Sacra in the late 1990s by the region’s old vines and untouched Jurassic landscape when his family purchased land in the Bibei Valley. The 45 hectares of vineyards, at altitudes of 200-800 metres, are spread across terraced slopes with slate and granite soils sprinkled with quartz.

The fresh acidity and depth of flavour achieved in the vineyard are preserved with minimal intervention in the winery, using indigenous yeasts, concrete tanks and extra-large wooden barrels. The wines reflect the diversity of the plantings of their predecessors: the Mencía-based reds include Brancellao, Mouratón and Sousón, while the whites feature Godello, Albariño and Treixadura.

Javier Dominguez says: “The Dominio do Bibei project was born from the initiative of a group of people whose origins are linked to the Bibei valley and its rich viticultural heritage. We are immersed in the almost heroic task of working with vines planted in deep valleys and river gorges, interpreting the essence of our site, and transmitting this through our wines.”
