Producer
John Duval Wines began with a single wine and grew over two decades to become one of the Barossa’s most celebrated producers. John Duval is the sixth generation of his family to grow grapes in South Australia, but only the first to transition from grape growing to winemaking. Previously Chief Winemaker at Penfolds, where he made some of their most celebrated vintages of ‘Grange’ (one of Australia’s most celebrated wines), he founded his eponymous winery in 2003.
Rather than emulating Penfolds, John has carved out his own expressive style rooted in the exceptional vineyards he works with across Barossa. In 2016, John Duval Wines welcomed its next generation, as eldest son Tim joined the family wine business to work alongside his father. John and Tim source fruit from long-time friends in the Barossa, whose low-yielding vines are aged from 50 to well over 100 years old. Showcasing the best of the region, their wines are made with minimal intervention and are characterised by an elegant purity that differs from the classic, rich Barossa style.
The ‘Plexus’ Shiraz/Grenache/Mourvèdre was John’s inaugural wine in 2003 and quickly established his reputation. The Shiraz hails from vineyards in Krondorf, Marananga and Ebenezer, giving the wine lovely weight and depth. The Grenache is sourced from old bush vines planted in Ebenezer and Tanunda, providing excellent aromatics and a soft, rich palate. In contrast, the Mourvèdre, sourced from old bush vines in Light Pass and Krondorf (the oldest being over 100 years old), has a spicy character and firm tannic structure. The ‘Plexus’ white, a Marsanne/Roussanne/Viognier blend, is partially fermented and aged in oak. It is defined by fresh citrus, peach and white floral notes, a beautiful textural quality on the palate and a touch of spicy ginger on the finish.
‘Entity’ is sourced mainly from old Shiraz vineyards in Krondorf, Tanunda and Light Pass. In recent years, it has also included some Eden Valley fruit to further enhance the vibrancy and elegance that define John’s winemaking style. Made only in the best years, from a selection of the highest quality grapes across the Barossa and Eden Valleys, John Duval’s ‘Eligo’ Shiraz commands attention. The resulting wine has an incredible depth of flavour, packed with layers of plum, blackberry, spice and liquorice and fine, well-integrated tannins. The ‘Annexus’ Mataro was made for the first time in 2016 with fruit from a 100-year-old vineyard in Light Pass. It displays spicy plums and red cherries with earthy notes and hints of leather.
Vineyards
The process of creating Eligo begins pre-harvest in the vineyard, where the most exceptional parcels of fruit for the vintage are identified. Grapes are sourced from old vineyards from the Ebenezer, Moppa and Eden Valley regions, with the final blend comprising 30% Barossa Valley and 70% Eden Valley fruit. The Barossa Valley components deliver depth and structure to the palate and an overlay of rich concentrated fruit flavour that is complimented by the vibrant aromatics of the Eden Valley components.
Vintage
2021 brought welcome rains following previous years' drought conditions, resulting in better crops and larger berries. Conditions from late February to April were ideal, with mild days and cool nights allowing for even flavour development and balancing acidity. There was an even pace to the 2021 vintage. The fruit was able to ripen evenly, resulting in an exceptional final harvest.
Vinification
The parcels of fruit were fermented separately in small stainless steel fermenters with submerged caps and twice daily pump overs. Some batches were left on skins for up to two weeks to extract additional colour and structure. Post classification, the component wines were matured in oak for 18 months, 42% in new fine grain French oak hogsheads (300 litre) and the balance in two- and three-year-old hogsheads. While the wine is approachable in its youth, it will also benefit from at least five years of cellaring, with good drinking potential for at least 20 years.
Tasting Notes & Technical Details
The Shiraz features bold black fruit aromas, with hints of anise, clove, and lifted florals. Richly textured on the palate and powerful. Hints of ironstone and liquorice unfold with well-integrated tannins.
